Environmental- Premcor refinery has plans to expand their operation,
The expansion should be complete by two thousand and six; this expansion will increase their oil production by 75,000 additional barrels of oil per day
What does this mean for the community? More pollution. They claim this expansion will bring 800 temporary jobs and 50 permanent jobs, with the additional pollution it will bring, is it worth it? The community that is directly impacted by the pollution rarely benefit from those jobs. One thing is certain we will see an increase in doctor visits and higher medical bills. In light of the expansion, the
Community In-power and Development Association Inc. held a march and protest on Nov-12-04 the march was led from the Carver Terrace housing project to City Hall, we then requested that the Mayor come out and answer question as to why he is allowing industry to dump these dangerous chemicals into our air, he refuse to answer any questions, The city manager said that he could not comment on environmental issues.
Our county voted to give 1.9 million dollars in tax abatements to Premcor this money could of benefited our dilapidated community, you can rest assure that we won’t benefit from cleaner air or the jobs they claim to be bring to the so called local area, as we all know local doesn’t necessarily mean the community the refineries are near.
